My 1 and a half year old twins have started to notice when the train goes by our house every morning and night. They quickly become quiet and mimic the train, with a CHOO-CHOO! As soon as they picked up on this I knew they would LOVE to go on a real train ride!
We live outside of Clinton, so it's about a 30 minute drive to the train station in Lincoln, before all the fun begins. I was able to pick the perfect times that worked around our nap after lunch, so that the kids would start to get tired as we were pulling back into the station in Lincoln! The Amtrak website is super easy to follow and pick any route you want to fit your schedule, with super cheap tickets, it's definitely worth the drive into town!
We boarded the train around 9 in the morning and had a short 30 minute ride to the station in Bloomington Normal. The train wasn't the only fun we had planned for this trip, because right next to the station is the Children’s Discovery Museum! The Museum opens at 9am, so our arrival was perfect timing.
Now we had around 2 hours to play on the three different levels of the museum before our train departed right before noon! Whether your kid is a new walking toddler, or an adventuring older kid, there is something for everyone! We played on the first 2 floors, letting the kids have an hour on each to explore all the fun!
From adventuring around a day on the farm by feeding or milking the cows, driving a tractor, watching farm videos and building with large blocks in the barn the second floor was perfect for my farm loving kids! As we moved back downstairs to the first floor they got to splash away at a water table big enough for a whole class, build their own tracks at the 2 different train tables, shop at the grocery market and explore the world of healthcare.
The short walk next door to await the train was perfect even on the chilly and windy day! I planned ahead and packed a lunch for the kids in case they got extra hungry, which was perfect when the train was running a few minutes behind! We got to have a fun picnic in the train station as we waited for the train to arrive!
